ALS is fatal disease caused by the degeneration of motor neurons. In this disease the nerve cells in the central nervous system become degenerated and loss the control of the movement of voluntary muscle.
The motor neurons become gradually atrophied (in Greek a=no, myo=muscle, trophic=nutrition) and lost the coordition of body parts with brain. The patients suffering from ALS gradually loss the capability of movements and speech.
Although the brain completely loses its ability to control voluntary movement yet not necessarily the patient will loss his power of mental functioning.
There are no such effective cure of ALS but some drugs like Rilutek can reduce the further damage of motor neurons. |
