Today is Kali Puja.
Maa Kali is the other form of goddess Durga in frightening and destructive mood.
She is considered as the most powerful goddess in Hindu mythology.
The name Kali is derived from a Sanskrit word 'kala' means time, so is the goddess of eternal time.
Her body is black because she is beyond any color and she is nude like nature and eternity and she is devoid of any illusory covering or 'maya'. Her three eyes stands for past, present and future, the three modes of time.
Her garland of fifty human heads stands for fifty alphabets of Sanskrit(Devnagri script), she is the source and the controller of every sound present in nature, yet she remains silent by biting her tounge.
Her girdle of human hands signifies the liberation from the cycle of 'karma'.
Her four arms carry a sword, a trident, a severed human head and a cup made of human skull. Her sword(kharga) is the destroyer of all evils, her trident(trishul) is pointing towards past, present and future. Severed head is the symbol of wisdom and the skull cup from which she is drinking is the symbol of human ego, which must be eliminated to attain 'moksha'.
She is standing on top of god 'Shiva'(who is also her spouse, according to Hindu mythology). This posture implies that females are the source of all energies and are more powerful than males. |
